IT in Oil and Gas Industry Found Its Own Independent Voice
The 2nd Federal IT Forum of the Russian Oil and Gas Industry was held
in St. Petersburg on 21-22 September 2016, and it proved to be a success. The forum has become the key meeting point for the CIOs of oil and gas companies, Russian and international developers, government authorities
and development institutions. With 13 sessions and 82 speakers, the forum continued for two days, and the number of its participants exceeded
430 people.

This forum is the only business event in Russia, where the CIOs of the largest oil and gas companies can meet on equal terms and discuss their common goals and problems. The companies they represent are competitors in the market,
but there is no competition between the IT departments; on the contrary, they can share their best practices and propose joined initiatives. All major vertically integrated oil and gas companies became aware of this fact, and their awareness contributed to the success of the IT Forum of the Russian Oil
and Gas Industry.

In 2016, the forum was joined by the CIOs and top managers of such companies as Gazprom Neft, Gazpromneft NTC, Rosneft, Surgutneftegaz, Zarubezhneft, Tatneft, Bashneft, Sibur, Gazprom, Gazprom Gazenergoset, Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat, Gazprom International, Yamal NLG, Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd. and others.

For the second time, the general partner of the forum was Gazprom Neft.
The event was officially endorsed by the Russian Energy Agency, the National Association of Oil and Gas Services, the Association of Oil and Gas Suppliers Sozvezdye, RSPA "Russian Software", the International Telecommunications Academy (MAC), and Innopraktika – a company consisting of MSU's Center
of National Intellectual Reserve and the Foundation "National Intellectual Resource".

The organizer of the IT Forum of the Russian Oil and Gas Industry was ComNews Group in partnership with ITSK. In 2016, the forum was sponsored
by all the leading international and Russian companies working in such sectors as IT, telecommunications and industrial automation. The platinum sponsor
of the forum became SAP, the gold sponsors – OTR (Organization and Technology Solutions) and Microsoft. Cisco Corporation chose the status of the innovation partner, Huawei – the ICT partner. The silver sponsors were Wipro Ltd., Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Lenovo, the bronze sponsors –
AT Consulting, Dell EMC, Red Hat and Forcepoint.

Session partners and sponsors included Rostelecom, ADV Consulting,
BDO Unicon, Gazprom Space Systems, INLINE GROUP, Galaktika Corporation, COMPLETE Company, Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC), Kaspersky Lab, Research Institute of Complex Security Systems (NII SOKB), Sovzond, 1C Company, EleSy, Aсcenture, Ciena, Citrix, Comindware, GTNT, Linxdatacenter, Siemens, Thuraya Telecommunications, VMware. The Forum sponsors also were Riverbed, Directum, Supertel, T8, Trinity, GE, OTN Systems.

Orange Business Services and ZTE Corporation had the status of registration sponsors, Roxar – of the evening reception sponsor. The forum was accompanied by an exhibition, and the general exhibitors were SIS Incorporated, GTNT, OCS, Polycom, Samsung and Thuraya Telecommunications. The companies which participated in the exhibition were Microsoft, DELL EMC, Red Hat, Xcom, Ciena, Complete, ADV Consulting, AT Consulting, ITSC, Supertel, T8, Gazprom Satellite Sistems, RTCOMM, NII SOKB, OS GROUP, Trinity, Iridium, Mobile Satellite Technology, Svyaz engineering. The linguistic partner
of the forum was Abbyy LS.

The IT Forum was traditionally opened by a session with the CIOs of the largest Russian oil and gas companies; they participated in an open discussion and spoke about the key development trends in the industry. Almost all IT directors agreed that progressive companies should undergo a digital transformation, which will lead to a new technological paradigm – the so-called "new industrial revolution". This new paradigm is often referred to as Industry 4.0, and this topic became the focus of all sessions during the IT Forum 2016. The other important topic was the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) forming the technological basis for Industry 4.0.

Vitaly Baranov

A lot of things in IT sector could be done directly in Russia. We just have to consolidate the industry demand that will trigger the Russian IT companies' activity, will help them to clarify the market needs, and – with the State support – to develop and offer the tailored products to the national oil and gas sector. At the same time we are self-conscious that oil and gas companies in Russia can't abandon completely from the foreign IT products and services.
We would like to decrease the number of our risks in IT sector and to manage the risks for this aim. Therefore I invite all market players to dialogue and the mutually beneficial cooperation.
Leonid Konik

CEO, Editor-in-Chief, ComNews Group

IT services' continuity and availability constitute one of the greatest concerns
for IT Departments of the oil and gas companies. To ensure these requirements
IT Departments have to manage the expenses and risks in highly effective ways.
The number of potential risks in IT for Russian oil and gas companies within the last couple of years increase dramatically, including the depreciation of the national currency, economic (and first of all, sectoral) sanctions imposed
by Western countries, corporate expenses and federal target programs cuts, the lack of the national offer in response to the industry's import substitution request,
a low volume of statistics on performance and fault tolerance of Russian
IT products, as well as the insufficient use of data as digital asset.
